You May Be A Victim Of Software Counterfeiting

When you log on to a computer with non-genuine copy of Windows XP, the possible notification error message “This copy of Windows is not genuine” will be pop-up on the logon process..You maybe seen this picture.

Just click the Resolve Later to continue loading in your windows. Or the click the Get Genuine to connect you to the internet for activating your software.

This notification will also shown after the windows explorer has been loaded.

And as you notice a small balloon will appear in your taskbar showing the "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting."

How can you disable this, you may follow this instruction but try it on your own risk!

  1. Lauch Windows Task Manager.

  2. End wgatray.exe process in Task Manager.

  3. Restart Windows XP in Safe Mode.

  4. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32.

  5. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache.

  6. Lauch RegEdit.

  7. Browse to the following location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
    Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

  8. Delete the folder ‘WgaLogon’ and all its contents

  9. Reboot Windows XP.

I tried this procedure and it worked very fine , thanks for such a good tip

I tried it too and it works! The WGA exe process doesn't die when you kill the session so you might have to delete it Safe mode at the DOS prompt.

A much easier way it seems is to simply rename the files.

I tried to follow these instructions, but could not end wgatray.exe process in task manager.

Go to c:\windows\system32 and rename wgatray.exe (i just used wgatrayold.exe)

search for the file 'wgalogon' and rename that too (again i just called it wgalogonold)

When you restart your computer the problem should be resolved. I dont get the notifications anymore, and my desktop background etc all looks ok.

Can anyone confirm if this works for them too?
